Emotions is influenced by various genres such as gospel, modern rhythm and blues, soul, pop, and ballads from the 1950s and 1970s. Many authors and producers were involved in the creation of the album, including Walter Afanasieff - the only one who remained from the previous creative group of the Mariah Carey album.
