Jepsen attended Heritage Park High School in Mission, British Columbia. Before auditioning for Canadian Idol, she attended the College of Performing Arts in Victoria. Following the conclusion of the Canadian Idol tour, Jepsen returned home to focus on songwriting and recording. Jepsen soon signed with record labels Fontana and MapleMusic and began working with producer Ryan Steward.
On June 16, 2008 Jepsen's debut single was released, a cover of John Denver's single, "Sunshine On My Shoulders". This is the only rehash of someone else's song on her debut album. On July 21st, 2008, Jepsen added 2 new songs from the album to her MySpace page: "Bucket" and "Heavy Lifting". In August 2008, Jepsen wrote on her MySpace page that her debut album, titled "Tug of War", would be released on September 30, 2008. The page also announced the title of two songs included in the album: "Tug of War" and "Sweet Talker". The two songs went on sale on iTunes on September 16, 2008, and appeared on airplay on radio stations in Canada.

The video for the single "Tug of War" was released in January 2009. In May, the video for the second single from the debut album "Bucket" was released. All videos were directed by Ben Kneshton. Spring 2009 Jepsen toured Canada with Marianas Trench and Shiloh
Jepsen released her second album, Curiosity, on February 14, 2012. The album was produced by Ryan Steward and Kevin James Mayer produced the track "Dear Julien" for this album. On September 21, 2011, the single "Call Me Maybe" was released from the second studio album "Curiosity", produced by Josh Ramsey and Marinas Trench. "Call Me Maybe" is Jepsen's first song to reach # 1 on the digital download chart in Canada since January 2010. It is also her eleventh song to top the digital download chart tracked by Nielsen SoundScan since 2005. The song also peaked at number one on Billboard's Canadian Hot 100, becoming the fourth Canadian artist to top the chart, behind Avril Lavigne with Girlfriend, Nikki Janowski with I Believe and Young Artists for Haiti with Wavin 'Flag. On March 23, 2012, Jepsen made her first American television appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, performing Call Me Maybe. Carly Rae also became the first Canadian Idol member to top the UK Singles Chart with the single Call Me Maybe.
