McLean, Howie Dorough and their younger friend Nick Carter met frequently at music auditions. They realized that together they had a penchant for classical soul and decided to form a trio. Kevin Richardson met them through a workmate. Together they decided to create a group, named after one of the local markets, which became a gathering place for young people in the evening.
