REM [ar-e-em] is an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980, by musicians: Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass) and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). One of the most important and significant bands influencing alternative rock. The band almost immediately attracted attention with the melodic guitar sound of Peter Buck, who often played in the arpeggio style, and the characteristic vocals of Michael Stipe.
