The famous Dire Straits music video “Love Over Gold” was released in 1984. The track was released on the self-titled album. The presence of extended musical compositions with long instrumental passages in the album brings it closer in style to prog-rock. This is the band's last disc to feature drummer Peak Withers. In 1986, the album sold over 4.4 million copies in Europe. The album was certified gold in the United States. The recordings were attended by Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals, Alan Clarke - organ, piano, synthesizer, John Elesley - bass, Hal Linders - rhythm guitar, Peak Withers - drums.
