Malik began his studies in the Lower Fields, then moved on to Tong High School, and completed his studies at a public high school. Zane was not accepted in the first two schools due to his mixed blood. But after moving to another school at the age of twelve, Malik says he began to take pride in his background and looks. During his time on the X Factor, his grandfather died. He has a tattoo of his grandfather Walter's name in Arabic on his chest. He prefers street style music, drawing inspiration from Michael Jackson, Usher and Ne-Yo.
