Nene Cherry, the daughter of Swedish artist Monica Karlsson and percussionist from Sierra Leone named Amadou Jah, bore her mother's surname as a child, until Monica met the famous jazz player Don Cherry. Together with Don and his ensemble, the family began to travel across Europe and North America during Don Cherry's tours. In addition to Nene and Titio, Monica's daughters from their first marriage, two more sons soon appeared in the family. Interestingly, three children from the family became musicians - in addition to Nene herself, Titiyo Yambalu Felicia Jah, now a successful Swedish singer, and Eagle-Eye Cherry, an internationally famous rock singer, took up music.

Raised in such an aggressively creative environment, the girl, unsurprisingly, dropped out of school at the age of 14 and went to London, where she began to play in the punk band "The Cherries" (we don't think that parents accustomed to this lifestyle were very worried) ... Soon, Nene began to play DJ sets and rap, changed several ensembles and finally decided to start a solo career. By the time she began working on the first album Raw Like Sushi with her future husband Cameron McVey, Cherry was already a fairly well-known person in English musical circles - for example, she helped Massive Attack to mix the Blue Lines album, and the band's musicians in turn participated in the recording of her debut album. The first single from him, Buffalo Stance - a popular club hip-hop of the 80s - Nene performed on Top of the Pops when she was 7 months pregnant, which undoubtedly attracted the attention of the conservative audience. The album was released in 1989 and had some success, becoming "gold" in Canada, Holland and Switzerland. Interestingly, after the release of the album, Nene was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best New Artist", but lost to the German group Milli Vanilli, from which the award was subsequently withdrawn - it turned out that not the members of the ensemble were singing on the recording, but the group played all the concerts to the soundtrack. However, this incident, unfortunately, did not help the award go into the hands of Cherry, who really deserved it.

Sadly, Don Cherry did not find the world fame of his adopted daughter, he died in 1995, and a major success came to Nene in 1996, when her album "Man" was released. Two major hits appeared on it at once - the ballad Woman and, probably, the most famous song by Nene, 7 Seconds, recorded with the Senegalese Youssou N'Dour. Friends from the trip-hop party also appeared on the album - the track Together Now was recorded together with Tricky.

Nene plans to release the next album since 2003. So far, she and her husband are engaged in their project cirKus - the team has released two albums and periodically gives concerts in Europe. Nene also appears as a vocalist on the albums of friends and fellow musicians quite often.
