Sean's parents are Karen and Manuel Mendesa. The mother works as a real estate agent, the father is in business. Sean's mother is English, his father's parents moved to Canada from Portugal.

Mendes started out by making cover versions of famous songs and posting them on Vine, thanks to which he gained a lot of fans. He has often been compared to Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. Later, Mendes took part in the MagCon tour along with other young performers who became famous through social media. In 2014, Sean signed to Island Records, the same year he released his debut single, Life of the Party. Although the American radio stations initially ignored it, the song of the 15-year-old singer still ended up at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Mendes the youngest performer to have a debut single in the Top 25. The song was also featured in The Shawn Mendes EP, a four-track EP that sold over 100,000 copies and reached number five on the Billboard charts.
Mendes' full-length debut album, Handwritten, was released on April 14, 2015, shortly after the single "Something Big". The album sold well and debuted at # 1 on the charts in Canada and the United States. In 2015, Mendes' song "Believe" was included on the soundtrack of the Disney Channel fantasy musical "The Descendants" [4]. In May-October 2015, Mendes supported Taylor Swift at her North American concerts on the 1989 World Tour.

On November 20, 2015, Mendes' debut album was reissued as Handwritten Revisited. It includes five live recordings and four new songs, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer", written and performed by Sean and Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony. In January 2016, Mendes made a cameo appearance on the television series The Hundred, where he sang the song Add It Up by the Violent Femmes. At the same time, his single "Stitches" reached number one in the British charts. Also in January 2016, Sean signed a contract with the Wilhelmina modeling agency. In March 2016, Mendes embarked on a new concert tour of North America and Europe as headliner.
