Ne-Yo was born in Arkansas in 1979. His father (African American) and mother (African American and half Chinese) were musicians. Unfortunately, the family fell apart when Schaffer was still a child. The boy stayed with his mother, who moved with him to Los Angeles.
By the early 2000s, Ne-Yo was already making music professionally and even signed a contract with Columbia Records. However, the company canceled the agreement with the rapper even before the release of his debut album, which Ne-Yo managed to record. A breakthrough in the big media business for Ne-Yo was the song "Let Me Love You", which he wrote for the singer Mario. The track lasted nine weeks at number one on the Billboard charts. Employees of the Def Jam label arranged an informal meeting with one of the largest American hip-hop producers, the head of Def Jam, Antonio "LA" Reid, after which the executive director of Def Jam rapper Jay-Z signed a contract with Shaffer. Shortly thereafter, one of the producers' acquaintances, Big D Evans, coined the stage name for the rapper Ne-Yo, which is consonant with the name of Neo, the main character of the movie "The Matrix". Evans said that Schaffer sees music the same way Neo sees the matrix.
In 2006, Ne-Yo released his first album, "In My Own Words", which debuted at # 1 on the Billboard charts and eventually went platinum. The same fate awaited the second album, "Because Of You" (2007), and the third disc, "Year of the Gentleman" (2008), the title of which reflects Ne-Yo's vision of his place in the hip-hop industry: while everyone is addicted a vicious life and expensive entertainment, he would like to remain a real gentleman.
