Pre-debut
The first members of the group were recruited through Big Hit auditions in 2010 and 2011. The original roster went through a number of changes before finally establishing itself in 2012. Six months before their debut, the members began to build connections with fans and solidify their name on Twitter, as well as uploading covers to YouTube and SoundCloud.

Prior to debuting in 2013, RapMon was already an underground rapper and unofficially released several tracks, including a collaboration with Zico. Jin was an acting student at Konkuk University before auditioning, and Suga was also an underground rapper in Daegu. J-Hope, who was a member of the street dance team NEURON, was active in the underground dance scene, participating in various battles and competitions. Jimin was the main student at Busan High School of Arts in contemporary dance, but was later transferred to Korea Arts High School along with V, who auditioned in Daegu. Jungkook auditioned for many agencies after leaving Superstar K and eventually chose Big Hit.
2013: Debut with 2 Cool 4 Skool and O! RUL8,2?
The first album from the group's "school trilogy", like the first album in their career, was titled "2 Cool 4 Skool" and was released on June 13, 2013 along with the lead single "No More Dream". Their debut album earned them Best New Artist nominations at various awards such as the MelOn Music Awards and Golden Disk Awards, as well as the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. On September 11, the band released their first mini-album "O! RUL8,2?", Which consisted of 10 songs.

They also started their own show on SBS MTV called Rookie King Channel Bangtan. It's based on the fake news channel Channel Bangtan, through which members parody famous shows including VJ Special Forses and MasterChef Korea. Episode 8 premiered on September 3.

On December 9, during the group's promotion in Japan, Suga was diagnosed with appendicitis. He had to travel back to Korea for surgery and was unable to compete in the 2014 Idol Star Athletics Championships, SBS Gayo Daejeon and MBC Gayo Daejejeon at the end of the year.
2014: Skool Luv Affair, Japan debut, Dark & Wild, Wake Up and 1st concert tour
The third part of their "school trilogy", their second mini-album "Skool Luv Affair" was released on February 12, 2014. The group also released the track "Boy in Luv (상 남자)" and a video supporting it on February 11th. The album peaked at # 3 on the Billboard World Album Chart. On April 6, the group returned with the song "Just One Day (하루 만)" and the music video for it.

On March 7, Big Hit announced that BTS will be releasing their first Japanese album, which will consist of Japanese versions of the songs they already have. Album "2 Cool 4 Skool" was released on April 23; the first single to support it was the Japanese version of "No More Dream".

On June 14, the group took part in the Bridge to Korea festival, which took place in Russia and aimed at strengthening tourism between the two countries. 2015: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life and World Tour
From February 10 to 19, 2015, BTS performed in Japan for the Wake Up: Open Your Eyes Tour. They held concerts in front of 25,000 people in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Their second tour in Korea begins on March 28 - BTS Live Trilogy - Episode 1: BTS Begins.

On June 23, BTS released the music video for their single "DOPE (쩔어)" featuring The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1, which managed to reach over 1,000,000 views in the first 15 hours of release. The 2015 Live Trilogy Episode: The Red Bullet tour continued with stops in Malaysia, Latin America, Australia, USA and ended in Hong Kong on August 29th.

BTS was part of the Summer Sonic Festival, which included performances in Tokyo on August 15 and Osaka on August 16. On September 8, it was announced that they would be back on November 30 with "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2". 2016–2017: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever, Youth and Wings
In January 2016, game company Nexon announced that it would be releasing avatars for Elsword's characters based on the band members. They were also identified as models for SK Telecom and the face of BBQ Chicken in April.

The band's sixth Japanese single, "Run", was released on March 15th. A special edition of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever was released on May 2; The group held two concerts in Seoul at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena on May 7 and 8 in support of the albums. The show was attended by 24,000 people. The band then embarked on a tour of Asia and sold 144,000 tickets to their concerts. BTS also headlined the KCON festival in Los Angeles in June and New York in July, both times sold out.

Their second Japanese album "Youth" was released on September 7th, which sold 44,000 copies in the first 24 hours after release and soared to the top of the Japanese charts.
