Gazette started in early 2002 with five members who, despite their youth, already had experience in the music scene. Three of them worked together in previous groups (Ma'die Kusse and Kar + te = zyAnose); vocalist, Ruki (Hands), one of the guitarists - Uruha (Uruha) and bassist Reita (Reita). Two ex-members of Arita (Arita), guitarist Aoi (Aoi) and drummer Yune (Yune), completed the early line-up. Signed to Matina Records, they released their first single, Wakaremechi, as well as a VHS video in April, before promoting their name at various events and shining on upcoming compilations. It worked and the band played their first solo concert this December. And at the end of the year they took part in FINAL PRELUDE 2002 ~ 2003 Matina PRESENTS, after which Matina's label was disbanded.

When 2003 began, Yune announced his retirement from the Gazette. He was immediately replaced by Kai (former Mareydi † Creia member) and the band was signed to PS Company. They went on their first real tour with Indian band Hanamuke and released their first mini album, Cockayne Soup, which was followed by 2 more mini albums in the next 2 months.

When 2004 came, Gazette celebrated the end of the year with a one-man show at Shibuya AX (which was later released on DVD) and opened their official fan club. Towards the end of the year, the band released a second live DVD and gave fans what they had been waiting for for almost 2 years - their first full-length album, Disorder.

The band finished 2006 with the release of a new album, Nil. They immediately embarked on a massive tour covering all of Japan with over thirty shows. At the end of July, the group first appeared in Europe, in Germany, to the delight of their fans. Later, in October, an English version of their official website appeared.

They wrapped up 2006 and entered 2007 with an even heavier touring schedule and new singles, before announcing their new album STACKED RUBBISH in the summer, and two almost back-to-back tours. The first tour, which started in July, lasted for summer and fall, while the second tour closed the winter months. To the delight of its countless European fans, the GazettE also decided to return to Europe and announced a short tour in October in Germany, France, Finland and England.

Their next single, Guren, was released in early 2008 and topped the Oricon charts.

2009 began with the announcement of the release of a new single, DISTRESS AND COMA. In January, the GazettE played Peace & Smile Carnival 2009 at Nippon Budokan alongside other PS COMPANY bands. The live DVD went on sale after 3 months.
