Two brothers lived in the city of Nizhny Novgorod - Vladimir and Sergey Kristovsky. In July 2003, Kristovsky Jr. (Volodya) realized that he had accumulated a lot of songs with which he had to do something, and the brothers decided to create a new group. By this point, both already had a fair amount of experience working separately in local music bands. First, the songs were played in the local audience. Things went well, and it was decided to record a demo album. The Nizhny Novgorod studio recorded 15 songs composed and sung by Volodya, arranged by Sergei and performed together. He was sent to Moscow to record companies. The capital was very interested in the creativity of the group, and from that moment the history of the Umaturman group began.
Vladimir always loved to sing, but then he did not write songs yet. Unlike his brother Sergei, who wrote songs and performed them in public at an early age. At first it did not work out very well, but over time it went well. Vladimir brought his first demo tape to Moscow back in 1998. Then he played with a team called Top View. Kristovsky's songs sounded like a punk at that time. Once he handed out a cassette with these recordings to record companies. In one of them, the editors listened to it in his presence, after which they uttered in disappointment: "Boy, this sucks."
The guys continued to create, but an unexpected default canceled their plans. Making money with music was no longer possible. Then Vladimir went all out: at various times he worked as an apprentice for a gas electric welder, a private entrepreneur, a night nurse in a morgue, an operator at a gas station, a janitor in a kindergarten, a driver at the Ministry of Finance, etc. But at some point, the realization came to him that he did not want to earn money with anything other than music.
Meanwhile, his brother Sergei Kristovsky was also making his way to the musical Olympus. His team "Sherwood" was a great success in Nizhny Novgorod. The guys played songs of their own composition, and not covers, which was a rarity for the provinces.
Later, the brothers decided to create together, combined the previously written compositions into one demo album. The songs were very popular in Nizhny, and soon they were invited to Moscow.
The first public performance took place in the club "16 tons" at a concert by Zemfira in 2003. The singer really liked the song "Praskovya", and she even invited the brothers to perform it with them, which they still recall with pride.
The name “Umaturman” did not appear immediately. The former name did not fit well with the music played by the Kristovskys. In addition, the name turned out to be so intricate that it was always confused or not remembered at all. The brothers and comrades sat down and came up with a new name for the group. Firstly, because Uma Thurman is the musicians' favorite actress, and secondly, because one of the brightest songs of the album is dedicated to this very actress.
The story had a rather unexpected continuation. Once a journalist from Moscow came to the American Uma to interview and told about the existence of her namesake group in Russia. Uma wanted to meet the guys. The Kristovskys have not yet met with Uma Thurman, but they managed to sing that very song personally to Quentin Tarantino. It happened at the opening of the Moscow Film Festival. At the end of the event, Nikita Mikhalkov introduced the group to his friend Tarantino, after which the guys performed the creation of the same name. Their performance was accompanied by a very funny clip, cut from frames of films with the participation of Uma Thurman and Russian film classics. The famous film director mentioned in the song was very pleased with the surprise presented. He laughed a lot, looking at the screen and listening to the simultaneous translation of the song. Taking the opportunity, the musicians "Umaturman" handed over to Tarantino a parcel for their "namesake", which contained the recordings of the group and the translation of the song about her and the video clip for "Praskovya". The maestro promised to hand over the package. Volodya believes that everything he dreams of will come true sooner or later. Therefore, he is confident that the acquaintance with the actress will definitely take place. "Umaturman" is the only group in the history of the Moscow Film Festival to have the honor to perform at the opening ceremony.
