After parting with Genesis, Peter Gabriel embarked on a solo career, furiously undertaking to implement all of his musical and social ideas. What was embodied in the conceptual works of Genesis was reflected in the diversity of solo works.

Initially, Gabriel did not intend to give his solo records any names, heading each simply - "Peter Gabriel". This continued until 1986, when Gabriel released his fifth solo disc entitled "So", going to the other extreme - now all his discs did not contain more than one word in the title, preferably a monosyllabic one. True, in 2008 Gabriel broke this tradition too, releasing an album under the modest and discreet title "Big Blue Ball".

In addition to releasing his own (naturally, conceptual) albums, Gabriel began to actively act as a film composer. At the same time, the directors were bribed in him not only by his fantastic performance, but also by the desire to comprehend the director's intention as accurately as possible and express it in the soundtrack. As a result, soundtracks for films such as "Birdy" and "The Last Temptation Of Christ", released on separate LPs, took very high places in the charts.

In addition to writing, Gabriel was actively involved in social activities. One of his main public events was the world music festival called WOMAX, during which Gabriel brought together musicians of various directions and styles, representing musical cultures of almost all countries of the world, on one stage. In addition, fighting for human rights, Gabriel founded Project Witness, a non-profit organization that supplies activists with video cameras to expose various wrongdoings and abuses.
